Before I created Carr Kids Handmade, I found myself searching for "something different" to gift my friends and family who were starting their own young families. As a new parent myself, I realised that the best gifts were quality items that made life with a newborn fun and easy.
It was hard finding a present that didn’t look mass produced or was so common that the parents would probably receive it from someone else. I ended up sourcing fabrics and sewing my own bibs to suit their likes and personalities.
This also satisfied my love of buying and creating out of beautiful fabrics, and I enjoyed giving my friends a gift that was lovingly handmade and not available anywhere else.
I was also living in New Zealand at the time and found that bibs were a nice lightweight and non-fragile present to post back to family and friends in Australia.

As time went on....
I tweaked the design and the materials I used to make the bibs. Through experimenting with my own children I found that using a layer of flannelette underneath the top printed fabric absorbed a lot of fluids. Adding a third thick backing layer stopped the fluids from seeping through to the clothes it was worn to protect, while enabling the bib to feel soft, thick and luxurious.
I also changed the neck closure from hook and loop tape to strong resin snaps. The hook & loop tended to get loose in the washing machine and snag on other precious items and, as my son got older, he was able to tug on the bib and pull it off by himself – not an ideal situation in the middle of dinner. At first I started using metal snaps but found they were expensive and a little fiddly to attach, and some detached during use which was a real safety issue. I then discovered resin snaps, available in an array of amazing colours, and the snap press to attach them VERY securely.
After receiving positive feedback about the bibs...
I was encouraged to make and sell them to help others looking for unique and practical gifts. I added fabric-trimmed bath towels and wash clothes, goats milk soap, cards and gift box options to my shop.
My signature range, the “Country Lane Collection,” is available throughout the year, with other collections popping up during the year in limited quantities.
